probably because it’s not. i had to look this up because i thought you just blew my mind, but unfortunately - it’s not the case. the etymology goes back to the 1850s and it’s just a “euphemistic alteration of hell.” also, if you want to dig deeper - it is also said to have Scottish origin — from the word hech, which is an interjection of surprise or shock.
